Elector Approval

Approval of the Electors

If the Community Charter (section 84) or the Local Government Act requires the approval of electors in relation to a proposed bylaw, agreement or other matter, the approval must be obtained either through a voting opportunity (referendum) or by alternative approval process. A voting opportunity requires electors to vote for a solution and follow the election process described in Part 4 of the Local Government Act.

Alternate Approval Process

An Alternative Approval Process (AAP) allows a Council to proceed with an action unless at least ten per cent (10%) of the electors state their opposition within a prescribed period. If more than ten per cent (10%) of the electors state their opposition to the proposed action, the Council may not proceed with the action unless the matter is made subject to and successfully passes a referendum.
