Richmond to commemorate National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day

June is National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day is on Tuesday, June 21.

There are a variety of in-person and virtual events and activities taking place in Richmond to recognize the heritage and strength of Indigenous Peoples.

Highlights of activities include:

Short Video - Sea to Sky: Making of a Public Artwork
Online Video: Sea to Sky: Making of a Public Artwork
Learn about the creation of a new public artwork, Sea to Sky, a five-storey-high glass artwork integrated into the façade of the Paramount development in Richmond’s City Centre, with Musqueam artist Thomas Cannell, in collaboration with Michael Mayer of Franz Mayer of Munich.

StoryWalk: Orca Chief at McLean Park in Hamilton
Tuesday, June 21, 3:30 p.m.
McLean Neighbourhood Park, 22500 McLean Avenue
Participate in Richmond Public Library's new permanent StoryWalk® installation at McLean Park. Orca Chief is a traditional northwest coast legend about caring for the sea and its inhabitants, as well as sustainable fishing. Orca Chief, by Roy Henry Vickers and Robert Budd, is the story of four hunters who encounter the Chief of the Killer Whales.

Cedar Weaving Workshop with Rita Kompst
Saturday, June 25, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Richmond Arts Centre, 180-7700 Minoru Gate
Join Musqueam artist Rita Kompst to learn traditional techniques of Coast Salish cedar weaving and, using locally harvested cedar prepared by the artist, create a unique bracelet to take home. The workshop is open to adults and the course fee is $18.70 per participant. Register for workshop. (Course ID 162123).
