Move for Health Week is May 6 - 10 - we encourage you to get out and get active!

2013 Move for Health Week Events
Celebrate World Move for Health Day with an entire week of events highlighting the benefits of healthy active living! 

Try out one of the fitness classes being offered at community recreation facilities across the city throughout the week, learn something new at one of the scheduled Speaker Series events, support your kids to be active one hour a day as part of the school challenge and come to Minoru Park for the Move for Health Festival on Friday evening, featuring activities for all ages!

Move for Health Day Celebration
Celebrate World Move for Health Day on Friday May 10! Richmond will be the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) provincial launch site for Move for Health Day.

Richmond is the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) provincial launch site for Move for Health Day! Celebrate with other members of the community and find out why Richmond is the best place to get active!

Event highlights include:

  • Mayor’s Address/Opening Ceremony
  • Provincial Move for Health Day launch – announcement from BCRPA CEO Suzanne Strutt
  • Main Stage Programming, including high energy dance performances and the Tropitonics Steel Band
  • Roving entertainment, including the City’s newest mascot, “Active Jack
  • Interactive activities and exhibits, with more than 20 community organizations offering “try-it” activities that highlight the wide range of opportunities for physical activity available in Richmond
  • ParticipACTION Funmobile on site
  • Two of the Lower Mainland’s most popular healthy food trucks

Learn about foods, nutrients, lifestyle modifications and Chinese medicine to improve brain health from prevention of dementia, to improved sleep, energy, cognition and stress tolerance.

Lost Adventures of Childhood – Video and Discussion

This session will include a showing of the documentary produced by Sunday Night Entertainment that examines the impact of the loss of unstructured free play on children. When the value of play is not understood, the educational performance and mental health of children may be affected. Learn about the importance of play in the development of children becoming well-balanced adults. An open discussion will follow the video presentation.

School Challenge
Make sure your school classroom is moving for health!!  Students can check off each day they are active for at least one hour on the in-class PDF Document Activity Tracker (supplied to all classrooms). All participating classes will be entered into a draw for a Community Recreation Services prize package!  

Come to the Move for Health Festival on Friday May 10 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Minoru Park for the prize draw and lots of fun activities for the whole family.

Art Challenge
How do you "move for health"?

Download the PDF Document Art Challenge and draw a picture to show how you move for health! Bring your completed artwork to the Move for Health Festival on Friday May 10 between 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Minoru Park to meet Active Jack and pick up your Active Jack tattoo! All posters will be displayed onsite at the event.

Community/Workplace Challenge
Did you know that being active for at least 150 minutes per week can help you improve your health and fitness, strength and self-confidence?

All community members and workplaces are encouraged to be active during Move For Health Week! To participate in the Community/Workplace Challenge, download and print the PDF Document Community/ Workplace Challenge Activity Tracker. Bring your organization's completed chart to add to the mural at the Move for Health Festival on May 10 at Minoru Park!

Results will be viewable at www.richmond.ca/moveforhealth and all participating organizations will be eligible for a draw prize and bragging rights!
