Food Scraps & Yard Trimmings
Multi-Family Green Cart PilotStart reducing your garbage today. Recycle food scraps and yard trimmings.
Thank you for participating in the Green Cart Pilot Program. We are pleased to advise that this program will become permanent starting in June, 2013, as well as be expanded to all townhomes with the City’s garbage and/or Blue Box service. In addition, a new service for large item pick up will be introduced, also starting June, 2013.
Expanding food scraps and yard trimmings recycling service will allow us to increase waste diversion. The design of the new program is based on input you provided as participants in the Green Cart Pilot Program last year. Our thanks go to the many residents in the pilot program who shared their experiences and provided us with excellent input so that we could tailor our new program to meet the needs of townhome residents. We learned some important details -- 78% of pilot program participants surveyed indicated their garbage was reduced by 50-70%, and 84% indicated they were placing their carts out for weekly collection. The pilot program helped to divert about 323 tonnes of food scraps and trimmings over nine months or 135 kg/unit/year. That’s equal to over 22% of materials remaining in the garbage which can now be recycled through the Green Cart program! These are excellent results that show how recycling food scraps and yard trimmings can help us achieve our goal of 70% waste diversion by 2015.
