About the Program
The City of Richmond's Tree, Bench and Picnic Table Dedication Program was introduced in February 1991 and was adopted by Council in March 2003. The program offers community members the opportunity to dedicate an existing bench or table in one of Richmond's parks or open space systems to allow friends and families to recognize loved ones while simultaneously contributing to the enhancement of Richmond's parks and open space system. Due to the contribution of these dedications, there are currently more than 450 benches and 50 tables within Richmond parks.

Bench and Picnic Table Dedication Details
- All bench dedications are accepted on the basis of being maintained by the City of Richmond for 10 years. After 10 years, see the Tree, Bench and Picnic Table Policy.
- The bench/picnic table shall become City property and will be placed on the City's regular schedule of maintenance. The bench/picnic table will be relocated or removed whenever necessary; all reasonable efforts will be made to notify the dedicator if their bench/picnic table is affected.
- A maximum of three plaques per bench and eight plaques per picnic table are permitted for each dedication bench/table. Dedicators are to provide wording for the plaque to the City with the wording to match the plaque spacing requirements and approved by the City.
- The identity of dedicators shall become part of the public record.
- The minimum amount required to construct and install a standard City of Richmond park bench, on a crushed limestone pad, is $3,500 and $4,000 for a picnic table, respectively (inclusive of all charges).
- A tax receipt will be issued for the dedication amount less the value of the plaque.
- There may be special circumstances in which the dedication amount required, or the type of bench/picnic table installed, will be changed. These cases will be identified when the application is discussed with City staff.
- Costs are subject to change without notice.
Bench and Picnic Table Renewals
In October 2018, the City began the renewal process for all benches and picnic tables dedicated over 10 years ago. The renewal process gives dedicators the option to renew or to discontinue participation in the program. This allows new dedicators the opportunity to make a dedication in areas that were previously full. If you believe you dedicated your bench or picnic table over 10 years ago and have not yet received a renewal letter from the City, contact the Parks Department at parks@richmond.ca or 604-247-4453.
