Disaster Response Routes

Richmond City Council has approved disaster response routes for Richmond as part of its ongoing commitment to community safety. These disaster response routes, when activated, will be used by emergency responders to quickly move people to safety and supplies to residents in need.

A Key Part of the City's Emergency Response
As part of the City's emergency response, it's critical that first responders be able to bring in essential resources and supplies as quickly as possible, transport the sick and injured to hospital, gain access to incident sites, and execute controlled evacuations. By designating and signing these routes in advance and providing key response personnel with the appropriate identification, we are ensuring the mobility of our first responders and their ability to respond in the quickest manner possible, which enhances our ability to protect lives and property.

Where are the Routes?
Twenty three signs mark the Richmond network which runs along Alderbridge Way from the Highway 91 interchange, south on Garden City Road to Granville Avenue, west along Granville Avenue to No. 2 Road, along No. 2 Road from the airport to Steveston Highway, west on Steveston Highway to No. 1 Road, and south on No. 1 Road. 

How Will I Know When the Routes are Activated?
Public service announcements on the radio will provide information regarding the activation of specific routes and what they are being used for.

What Can I do to Help?
Emergency responders will control access to these routes to enable life saving equipment, ambulances, police, fire fighters, supply convoys and evacuees to get to where they need to go. When the routes are activated residents will be asked to help keep the routes clear by finding another way to get to their destination and moving parked cars. Once the life safety needs of the community have been addressed, the routes will be open for public use.
