Three people riding bicycles on a trail near the river The City of Richmond's Transportation Department generally undertakes several cycling and pedestrian facility, traffic calming and traffic signal projects each year. A list of specific projects is below. Please also refer to Construction Projects for a complete listing of construction projects.

Arterial Road and Crosswalk Improvement Programs

Explanation of Project

Special Crosswalks: Upgrade of existing crosswalks to add overhead illuminated signs with downward lighting and pedestrian pushbutton-activated flashing amber lights.

Arterial Roadway Improvements: Upgrade of existing intersections to improve road safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Scope of Work

  • Special Crosswalk: Installation of overhead lights and flashers and side-mounted beacons and push buttons.
  • Garden City Road & Westminster Highway: asphalt walkway with barrier along east and south sides fronting 9120 Westminster Highway
  • Granville Avenue & Cooney Road: removal of channelized right-turn island at northwest corner
  • Cambie Road & St. Edward's Drive: removal of channelized right-turn island at northeast corner
  • Cambie Road & No. 4 Road: new left-turn lanes on all four legs
  • Westminster Highway & No. 2 Road: removal of channelized right-turn island at northwest corner, enlarge pedestrian refuge areas, modification of intersection geometry and traffic signal

  • Typical hours of work will be from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
  • Vehicle and pedestrian traffic may be limited at times.

Transit-Related Amenity and Roadway Improvement Programs

Explanation of Project

Upgrade of existing bus stops to become accessible for mobility-impaired users; provision of shelters and benches at bus stops; and provision of pedestrian connections to and from bus stops.

Scope of Work

  • Installation of bus stop landing pads and railings.
  • Installation of shelter and benches at bus stops.
  • Construction of concrete sidewalks or asphalt walkways to connect to and from bus stops.
  • Upgrade of crosswalks connecting to bus stops.

Traffic Signal Program

Explanation of Project

Various intersection improvements to improve traffic safety.

Scope of Work

  • Installation of new traffic signals
  • Installation of video detection cameras
  • Installation of overhead LED street name signs
  • Installation of accessible pedestrian signal features
  • Minor intersection improvements

  • No. 6 Road & Vulcan Way: new full traffic signal with railway crossing gates

Neighbourhood Traffic Safety and Walkway Programs

Explanation of Project

Construction of pedestrian walkways and installation of traffic calming measures on local roads within neighbourhoods.

Scope of Work

  • Installation of traffic calming measures
  • Shoulder widening and paving of pathways

Locations

  • St. Edwards Drive (350m west of Cambie Road-Bird Road): new walkway on north side
  • Westminster Hwy (Muir Road-150m east): new walkway on north side
  • River Road (No. 6 Road-Burdette Road): new walkway on northside
  • Traffic Calming Measures: locations to be determined

Active Transportation Program

Explanation of Project

Construction of cycling and rolling facilities to provide safe and convenient access to major destinations and improve the cycling and rolling environment and safety.

  • No. 2 Road: Steveston Highway-Williams Road
  • Lansdowne Road: Gilbert Road-Pearson Way
  • Browngate Road: Hazelbridge Way-No. 3 Road
  • Shell Road: Alderbridge Way-Highway 99 Overpass

Scope of Work

  • No. 2 Road: new off-street multi-use pathway on east side
  • Lansdowne Road: new off-street multi-use pathway on north side
  • Browngate Road: protected on-street cycle tracks on south side
  • Shell Road: reconstruction of existing off-street multi-use pathway on east side
