Indigenous Relations Strategy
The City is currently in the process of developing its first Indigenous Relations Strategy to provide a framework for reconciliation. The Strategy will focus on building respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples, educating City staff on the history of Indigenous Peoples, and establishing a City-wide approach to truth and reconciliation. The development of the Richmond Indigenous Relations Strategy demonstrates the City's commitment to building relationships with Indigenous Nations, Peoples and communities and provides a framework for setting priorities and allocating resource towards the path to truth and reconciliation.
The objectives of the Strategy are:
- Centering Indigenous knowledge to foster an environment of trust, inclusion and confidence.
- Fostering relationships built upon respectful, honest and open communication that will allow for collaboration on projects of mutual interest.
- Promoting accountability for personal and professional development on the path to truth and reconciliation.
- Establishing a foundation for a shared vision that respects individual values, beliefs, and collective knowledge.
The development of the Strategy involves four main phases:
The draft strategy framework is anticipated to be brought forward to City Council for consideration in Q4 2025. The City will seek community feedback once the draft strategy framework has been endorsed by Council. Information on future community engagement opportunities will be posted on this webpage, as well as LetsTalkRichmond.ca.
