About City Energy & Emissions Management
The City of Richmond walks the walk on sustainability. Most notably, in September 2008, Council signed the BC Climate Action Charter, voluntarily committing the City of Richmond to carbon neutral operations. Important efforts include:
- The Towards Carbon Neutrality Implementation Strategy
- Achieving carbon neutral commitments through a four-pronged strategy to measure emissions, reduce our impact, balance remaining emissions and report: Implementation Strategy
- Reducing energy use in buildings and infrastructure - Since 2007, the City has saved $1.5 million dollars on energy as part of our Energy Management Program for buildings, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 5000 tonnes (the equivalent of taking 1500 cars off the road for a year).
- Reducing energy use in the City’s vehicle fleet – The City’s Green Fleets initiative is a leader amongst North American local governments.
