Artist Statement
"Signs of Pride" is a collaborative work created by an intergenerational group of artists, ranging in age from 13 to 63. It incorporates digital and hand-drawn images of personal and political expressions of identity that are used to signal belonging. Based on research from The Arquives digital exhibitions of t-shirts and buttons, the artists responded to activist messages from earlier generations to echo current and consistent concerns that affect not only LGBTQ/2S+ rights and freedoms, but other liberation movements. As a collection of shared identities, this artwork is a moment of reflection on how to make sense of our place in the world, and how to make place for our sense of the world.
