Description of Work
This artwork consists of two mutually reflective artworks. "Shadow of Flight and the Celestial Pool" is a slab of sandblasted and stained concrete inlaid with fibre optics . "Khenko" is an aluminum and steel weather vane in the shape of a heron.
Artist Statement
"Shadow of Flight and the Celestial Pool", represents a pool of water, overlaid with a shadow of the great heron in flight. The twinkling lights represent the stars of the night sky, a new constellation.
"Khenko" is named after the First Nations' mythical Great Blue Heron; the large evocative and whimsical weather vane was inspired by this serene bird which resides year round in the natural settings of Richmond. The heron alludes to the myth of the crane in Japanese and Chinese culture: symbol of good fortune. The heron, a distinctive and beloved bird to many, is a reflection of the multicultural society of Richmond.
