The emphasis of individual creative expression and cross cultural exchange within a collaborative environment shaped the workshops and the final work. Artist Statement
The design Storeys Cafe Collaborative Mural was informed by the Storeys community from start to finish. Members of Tikva Housing Society, Coast Mental Health, Turning point, and guests at Recovery Day 2018, were asked to draw and discuss what their vision of a healthy community is in ideation workshops. Supportive relationships with others, access to healthy food, and good music were common themes that emerged from our discussions.
This intimate, collaborative process generated insightful and beautiful representations of what Storeys residents felt was important for creating thriving communities. The artwork forms the essence of the final design, as this is their space. John and Hee Jun composed their work into the windows of one big house. This represents the unique backgrounds of everyone at 8080 Anderson Ave. It is the artist's intention that these visions of healthy communities serve as a visual reminder for Storeys patrons and residents of what can be achieved when people, organizations and cultural groups unite to create a diverse, safe and innovative world.
