Description of Work
Orbit is situated along a greenway in a residential neighbourhood of Richmond. Three main components are composed of unique individual forms reminiscent of "orbs." The forms with surfaces that are pearlescent white, metallic bronze and antique gold coloured surfaces of sculpture create lively reflections of changes in light and passing movement. Seen from a distance, Orbit is a tall welcoming marker identifying a peaceful region of its context of built and landscaped environment of the greway's place to rest, and marker of the entrance to an inner courtyard. It evokes rotational and vertical forces inviting contemplation of the relationship of its forms, surfaces modulating the light and spatial composition. The sculpture is 15' (H) x 11' (W) and 12' (L).
Artist Statement
Orbit is a permanent public sculpture intended to enliven and enhance Richmond's pedestrian greenway. It pays tribute to the peaceful built and landscaped environment of the site context. The sculpture contributes to the tranquility of the space and the surrounding gardens. It is a marker situated at the intersection of paths from four directions. Seen from a distance, it welcomes people from all cultures living near-by, inviting them to come together at this point of convergence.
The sculpture, with the reflective qualities of the metallic surfaces of the orbs, is activated by the changing light of the seasons and passing movement, enlivening the space, just as we are affected by and contribute to our surroundings. The placement of each of the unique orb forms, the pearlescent and iridescent colours that reference earth and sky and their reflective metallic surfaces animate the sculpture and draws attention to it's circular and orbital nature.
