Description of Work

"Here is There is Here" is a series of four drawings, digitally constructed, that highlight places in and around Aberdeen Station, intertwined with and interrupted by, depictions of places around the artist's hometown of Jakarta, Indonesia.

The four individual works are titled; Encounter, Convergence, Atrium and Intersection.

Artist Statement

Upon my arrival in Vancouver six years ago – my first in a West-Coast environment, a completely unfamiliar place physically and geographically – I felt immediately “at home." This was partially due to the abundance of Asian stores and restaurants in Richmond, and the availability of an assortment of foods, objects, and products that I associate with Jakarta, the city of my birth and where my family still resides. The sights, sounds, and visual stimuli of places like Richmond bring me a sense of comfort, a nexus that is simultaneously Asian and Canadian, seemingly familiar yet also somewhat foreign, akin to being in two disparate locations at the same time. The four works in "Here is There is Here" take this notion as a starting point. Each drawing is an amalgamation of urban spaces and structures from Richmond and Jakarta, collapsed and compressed into a singular space.
