The City of Richmond is inviting residents to take part in creative activities to contribute their memories and stories of the current Steveston Community Centre and Library and share their excitement for the new one to create eye-catching and engaging public art. 

Richmond artist Lisa Taniguchi will lead a series of free hands-on art workshops and fun interactive activities to inspire the artwork that will wrap 80 feet of the fencing surrounding the construction site. 

The family-friendly registered and drop-in activities, suitable for all ages and skill levels, offered at Steveston Community Centre and Library – Multipurpose Room (4111 Moncton Street), include:

• Walk-by word cloud
  Drop by and write or draw your stories on a large poster.
  Sunday, April 2, 9:30–11 a.m.
  No registration required
  Make a Steveston flag!

• Drop by to create your own Steveston Community Centre and Library flag.
  Tuesday, April 4, 2-4 p.m.

Visit the Steveston Community Centre and Library between Thursday, March 30, and Friday, April 7, to check out the on-site display in the lobby where public can draw or write their stories.


Check out the final artwork which will be installed at the construction site by July 1, 2023, and on display for the duration of the facility’s construction phase.

About the artist
Lisa Taniguchi is a graphic designer and lettering artist born and raised in Richmond. She has over eight years of experience working as a designer in the technology industry and holds a Bachelor of Graphic Design from Kwantlen Polytechnic University (2014). 

Taniguchi was selected for this project from Richmond Public Art’s Urban Infrastructure Artist Roster. This program offers opportunities for local artists from a variety of creative practices to display their artworks in the public realm and transform otherwise undistinguished elements of public infrastructure by incorporating art into everyday life.

About the new facility
The new 60,350 square foot three-story facility will include two gymnasiums, a fitness centre, community "living room,” library and study areas, as well as several multipurpose rooms for community use. Construction of the facility is scheduled for completion in 2026.
