The City of Richmond is offering new incentives to help residents transition to electric heat pumps as a cost-effective heating and cooling solution for their home. Owners of single-family homes, duplexes and townhomes can now receive a $350 rebate from the City on top of significant CleanBC rebates when switching from a fossil fuel system (oil, natural gas or propane) to an electric heat pump system. They can also apply for an additional $500 top-up for an electrical system upgrade if needed.
“Heat pumps are typically three times more energy efficient for heating or cooling a home compared to other systems,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This incentive program reflects the City’s leadership in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging the shift away from fossil fuels. Heat pumps can also reduce operating costs for homeowners over time, especially as fuel costs and carbon taxes increase.”
Space heating and domestic hot water systems account for approximately 90 per cent of annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from single-family homes, duplexes, multiplexes and townhomes in Richmond – equal to around 148,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.
Replacing gas-fired furnaces and domestic water heaters with electric heat pumps will result in a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. Other benefits include increased thermal comfort, enhanced indoor air quality, the ability to offer cooling as well as heating, plus the capability of dehumidifying a home during the summer.
Municipal top-up rebates are limited, and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
