Description of Work
The original artwork for 'Safe Haven' is based on the waterfront at Steveston with the distant coastal range to the north. The image of fishing boats safely berthed is a scene of comfort. The title and image of the boats safely home parallels the attention and care of being brought to the hospital.
Artist Statement
I was most honoured to be chosen to create an image for a mural at the emergency entrance to Richmond Hospital. My work over the past 21 years has been based on a style which uses strong positive energy colours and a bold contrast to make the images uplifting and engaging. To create a ten foot by thirty foot artwork for this area, which previously was grey concrete and of low energy, gave me great satisfaction. Changing the atmosphere in the emergency entrance does, I hope, in some small way, lift the spirits of those passing through this area of the hospital, for years to come.
