Tune in on July 1 for Canada Day at Home programming

Canada Day at Home, presented in partnership with the Steveston Salmon Festival, kicks off this Thursday, July 1 at 10am. The virtual program features interactive content appropriate for the whole family, including a digital parade, salmon cooking videos and even a salmon-themed public art scavenger hunt.

The day begins with a welcome from Mayor Malcolm Brodie and a performance from
Tsatsu Stalqayu (Coastal Wolfpack), a traditional Coast Salish singing and dancing group, at 10am. This will be followed by a Digital Parade showcasing virtual “floats” created by local businesses and organizations from across Richmond, as well as a rendition of “O Canada” by members of the all-women Richmond Singers choir.

All will be streamed on the City of Richmond YouTube channel and the Steveston Salmon Festival website.

The Steveston Salmon Festival, held every July 1, is an annual event rooted in history and heritage that provides an opportunity for thousands to come together in a display of community spirit. The online festival program incorporates re-imagined versions of some of the most loved components of the Steveston Salmon Festival such as the annual Horticulture Show, and the Japanese Cultural Show and the parade.

The Canada Day at Home line-up also includes:

  • Special online programming available from July 1
    Online programming on the Steveston Salmon Festival website includes a special presentation about the history of the Japanese Canadian community in Steveston; a presentation about the history of salmon and canning in BC and the key role played by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery; and several unique performances by local artists, musicians and more on a Virtual Mainstage. A city-wide salmon-themed public art scavenger hunt will be open from July 1 to 31.
  • Virtual contests open from July 1
    Head to @FunRichmond on Instagram to see the creativity of local residents. Two virtual contests will be running throughout July 1: the Digital Home Parade (#RichmondBCParade) and the Horticulture Show (#RichmondHorticultureShow). Submissions to the Horticulture Show are also being accepted through the Steveston Salmon Festival website. Winners for both contests will be selected by public poll between July 3 and 9, with winners announced on Monday, July 12.
