Voting underway in 2021 Richmond By-Election
17 May 2021
Voting is underway in the 2021 Richmond By-Election and voting by mail remains a popular and accessible means of casting a ballot.
For the first time, all eligible voters in the City of Richmond are able to submit their ballot via mail for the Saturday, May 29 By-Election. While Canada Post recommended ballots submitted through the post had to be mailed by May 14, the City is reminding voters that mail ballots can be completed and dropped off at a number of voting locations up until 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
Mail ballots are a safe, convenient way for eligible voters to exercise their democratic right and participate in the By-Election. So far, over 2,000 mail ballot packages have been requested and voters can still request a mail ballot package up to and on General Voting Day (Saturday, May 29) by going to the website at richmond.ca/electionservices. The online form will be available until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 27.
Anyone who is unable to submit an online request for a mail ballot package can contact the Elections Office for assistance at 604-276-4100, Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
All completed mail ballots must be received at Elections Headquarters before the end of voting at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 29 to be counted. Voters can use a mail ballot and place their vote in the drop box at Richmond City Hall at any time; at any advance voting location on the days and times they are open; or at one of the ten voting places on General Voting Day. Visit the City’s website to find locations and times.
Mail ballots are kept confidential and enable safe voting without lineups. Packages received after 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 29 cannot be accepted.
Advance voting opened on Saturday (May 15), and three more opportunities are available before May 29: Wednesday (May 19), Thursday (May 20) or Saturday (May 22). For locations and times, visit the Where do vote? page.
