Richmond celebrates National Seniors Day on October 1

Join the City of Richmond and its community partners for this annual celebration of National Seniors Day on Tuesday, October 1. More than 10 free or low cost programs and events will take place to celebrate seniors and promote healthy aging, such as social gatherings, pickleball tournaments, a movie at Brighouse Library and an intergenerational art workshop. In addition, the City’s annual Positive Aging Campaign will highlight six local seniors who embody the power of positive aging.

Pre-registration is required for National Seniors Day activities in Richmond as space is limited. A full list of activities and registration information can be found at richmond.ca/PositiveAging. A printed flyer can also be picked up from any Richmond Parks, Recreation and Culture facility.

National Seniors Day event highlights on Tuesday, October 1 include:

  1. National Seniors Day Socials
    Celebrate the day with light refreshments, learn about upcoming 55+ activities and share ideas for future programming.
    10:00–10:45am: West Richmond Community Centre (9180 No. 1 Road)
    10:30am–Noon: Steveston Community Centre (4111 Moncton Street)
    1:00–2:30pm: East Richmond Community Hall (12360 Cambie Road)
    3:15–4:00pm: Seniors Centre at Minoru Centre for Active Living (7191 Granville Avenue)

  2. Pickleball Tournaments (Indoors)
    Play in a fun pickleball tournament for beginners. Tournament play, refreshments and snacks included. Registration is for one player. Players paired randomly at the event.
    10:30am–1:00pm: Thompson Community Centre (5151 Granville Avenue)
    1:00–3:00pm: Thompson Community Centre (5151 Granville Avenue)

  3. Intergenerational Art Workshop
    Express creativity in this intergenerational session that builds connections and fosters community with Hamilton Community Association's Preschool Program participants. Supplies included.
    11:30am–12:30pm: Hamilton Community Centre (5140 Smith Drive)

  4. Line Dancing Social
    Get active and practice basic moves that make up current line dancing choreography. Light refreshments included.
    12:30–1:30pm: South Arm Community Centre (8880 Williams Road)

  5. Film Club Classics: Senior’s Movie Night “Wizard of Oz”
    Join the screening of the 85th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz (1939) produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).
    6:00–8:30pm: Richmond Public Library, Brighouse Branch (100-7700 Minoru Gate)

The Positive Aging Campaign also kicks off on National Seniors Day and runs Tuesday, October 1 to Monday, October 7. The campaign celebrates seniors, promotes healthy aging and reduces ageism by showcasing positive stories of six seniors in the community. It can be viewed on the City’s website and in-person at various City of Richmond community centres, the Seniors Centre at Minoru Centre for Active Living and City Hall.

Celebrated across Canada, National Seniors Day – also designated as the International Day of Older Persons by the United Nations – is held each year on October 1 to commend and recognize the contributions seniors make to their communities. 

The City of Richmond is an age-friendly community that is committed to supporting healthy aging for all residents. Throughout the year, a variety of programs and activities are available for seniors.
