About the Project

Thanks to generous funding from the Friends of the Richmond Archives, as well as a grant from the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at the University of British Columbia, through the British Columbia History Digitization Program, the City of Richmond Archives has been able to scan and make available online the photographs and maps included in this exhibit and in the British Columbia Packers Limited Insurance Photographs and Maps database. The approximately 900 photographs, maps and architectural drawings were selected from Series 3 and Series 9 of the British Columbia Packers Limited fonds.

Specifications and Standards

The scanned images of photographs were created onsite using an Epson Perfection 1660 Photo scanner and the following software: Adobe Photoshop 7.0; Epson Twain 5; Roxio Easy CD & DVD creator, version 6.0.

The photographs were scanned once and saved in .tiff format. From these files, .jpg files were created for web access and display.

Cartographic and architectural drawings were outsourced for scanning to Micro Com Systems Ltd. Two full-size images (.tiff and .pdf format) and one thumbnail (.jpg format) were created. The .pdf and .jpg versions have been published for web access and display.

Rules for Archival Description were the principal descriptive standard followed for the metadata associated with the images.

The database and web interface were created using Inmagic CSTextworks and Inmagic Web Publisher.

Exhibit web pages were created using IronPoint Content Management Software according to established City of Richmond standards.
