Biography:
Richard Chatterton enlisted in Vancouver, January 6, 1916, aged 22, giving his occupation as a plasterer, the same as his father, Fred Chatterton. At the time of his enlistment, Richard's addressed was Rural Route, Eburne, while his parents lived in Brighouse, Lulu Island.  

He joined the 11th Regiment Irish Fusiliers on enlistment and was transferred to the 121st Overseas Battalion embarking at Halifax on the Empress of Britain August 14, 1916. After arrival in Liverpool on August 24, 1916 he was posted to Bramshott. Richard was moved to the 54th Battalion on his arrival in France on December 14, 1916. In April, 1917 he was reprimanded for being unshaven on parade and he served seven days in Field Prison No. 1. Richard Chatterton was killed in action on June 4, 1917. During his time in the armed forces, Richard's father must have died as all his possessions were sent to his widowed mother, Frances. In 1920 a plaque, scroll and the memorial cross plus a war service gratuity of $180 were sent to her by the Canadian Government.
