Chilcotin River Breach Update

Richmond cautions public about waterways and debris

Beware of debris - An excess of water and wood debris resulting from the Chilcotin River landslide and dam breach is expected to begin to make its way along the Fraser River through Richmond in the next few days. City staff will patrol the dikes to monitor any debris that could impact the City’s flood protection infrastructure. Increased inspections will be in place until those conditions subside.

The City is reminding people and their pets to exercise extreme caution near waterways and avoid entering the water until the risk has passed. The public is also advised to avoid temporary debris build-up that may occur on the shore and beaches. These debris “rafts” are often unstable and may unpredictably shift, or be pulled back into the river resulting in a dangerous situation.
