Prepare for warmer weather and changing air quality

With the arrival of summer comes warmer weather and, in some cases, heat and air quality warnings. Environment Canada can put Heat Warnings and Air Quality Advisories in place across the Metro Vancouver region when temperatures reach 30 Celsius or more in several communities.

When temperatures are above the expected range we remind everyone to follow the recommendations for dealing with heat, and to be especially conscious of looking after family members, neighbours, pets and others to ensure they are managing in the warmer weather. People should stay hydrated, keep blinds or curtains closed to reduce sun exposure, and watch for symptoms of heatstroke. Buildings such as shopping centres, community centres and libraries offer respite from the heat, and the City’s waterparks, misting stations and pools are in operation.

Air quality is another issue generated by warmer temperatures and reduced airflow. When an Air Quality Advisory is in place for the region, we remind everyone - especially those with respiratory conditions and other health issues - to monitor air quality warnings and seek medical attention if experiencing breathing issues.
